Letter to Mr. President re: Keystone XL

http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact

Dear Mr. President:

Since I am reading online that you are on the verge of making a statement about Keystone XL and also have a visitor from Canada attempting to sell the continuation of the pipeline to your Administration, I am writing to suggest that “Walk softly and carry a big stick” is sometimes the best approach. Fortunately our domestic production of oil is at an all time high. We do not really need to continue subsidizing the wealthy who are in business to sell fuel.(1.) We don't need to threaten Canada, but we do need to defend our nation against the threats to environment that the pipeline and its burden of bitumen, diluted by some hydrocarbon as a solvent, is certainly a safety hazard.

You know already that both Arkansas (2.) and North Dakota (3.) have experienced obnoxious spills that endanger people, creatures and ecosystems. Beyond that people in Texas (3.) are objecting to the use of eminent domain in places that are worthy of protection too.

Going back to your earlier support of trains as transportation I know that you really do have the best outcome in mind for us all. Yet you have so many challenges dealing with Congress and other human concerns that I want you to know that environmentally responsible citizens want to continue to admire your Administration for taking the courageous path to a better future.

Thanks to you and your office staff for taking the time to read my brief note with the following references to news media sources.

Sincerely,

Patricia M. Berg
